Everything just went wrong for Meralco.
As much as they wanted to start the year right, the Bolts fell flat anew and was dealt with a painful 105-92 defeat to Mahindra, Wednesday, in the 2017 PBA Philippine Cup at Smart Araneta Coliseum.
The loss further compounded Meralco’s woes, losing its fifth straight to move bottom of the standings at 2-6.
Philip Paniamogan caught fire and exploded for a career-high 25 points, on a superb 7-of-9 shooting from threes. 22 of his points came in the middle quarters, where the Floodbusters pulled away and led by as much as 17, 48-31, early in the third.
Alex Mallari added a double-double of 13 markers and 11 rebounds, while Jason Deutchman and Nico Salva also both finished with 13 points. Mike DiGregorio chipped in 11 markers, while Russel Escoto added 10 points and five rebounds. The two were also pivotal for Mahindra, holding the fort after Meralco trimmed the lead to just eight, 75-67, after a Reynel Hugnatan basket at the 11:26 mark of the fourth.
Hugnatan topped the Bolts with 28 points, six rebounds, and three assists, while Chris Newsome got 19 markers, eight assists, and four boards.
