The Meralco Power Spikers’ perfect start to the Shakey’s V-League came to a screeching halt on Sunday afternoon, as Philippine Army recovered from losing the first set to win 3-1. Steph Mercado and Aby Maraño led the Power Spikers with 12 points each, but their contribution wasn’t enough to overcome the Armed Forces side, who relied on Rachel Daquis and Dindin Manabat.
After straight sets victories over Philippine Navy and Baguio City to start the campaign, Meralco maintained that air of invincibility by taking the first set, 26-24, against a star-studded Army. But after the first period, Army came alive in the second with an onslaught that the Power Spikers found very difficult to deal with.
Daquis, who finished with 16 points, was a constant thorn in the side of Meralco, along with Manabat, who chipped in with 13 points of her own. The duo were supplied by Tina Salak’s distribution, with 29 excellent sets to her name at the end of regulation. The setter also added nine points to help pace Army’s overwhelming attack.
With a resurgent second set performance, the Armed Forces side tied things up with a one-sided 25-17 period. They followed that up with a 25-20 set to take the lead, before sneaking through in the fourth and final set 25-22.
Despite suffering the first defeat of the Shakey’s V-League campaign, the Meralco Power Spikers have little time to revel in the disappointment as they take on undefeated PLDT Home Ultera on Sunday, April 26, 12:45pm, at the San Juan Arena.
