Joined Sparks: August 2014
Achievements: PFF National Club Championship Winner
Max Wright is a central midfielder, who has been with the Sparks for almost a year. After joining the club in 2014 on a short-term contract, the Englishman has extended his stay in the Philippines, where he loves the weather and the Loyola Meralco Sparks’ professional approach.
“I’ve been playing football since I was 6 years old – that’s 18 years now. I’ve been playing professionally since I was eighteen. I’ve always played in midfield. I also played on the right and left wing, but I prefer it in the middle,” Wright said in an exclusive interview with One Meralco Sports. “I’m a passing player, I like to keep the ball moving and keep it spraying around.”
Like teammate Charlie Beaton, who joined at the same time, Max was recommended by former long-time Loyola player Matthew Hartmann.
“I initially came out here for three months, then extended another eight months until this August. My friend Matthew Hartmann, who I used to play with back in England, he recommended me to the coach. That’s how I came over.”
“It’s a really good group of guys. I’ve really enjoyed it. It’s a very professional outfit. Obviously the weather is very different from England. I feel like I’ve acclimatized to that. That was a massive point for coming over here – the nice weather.”
With head coach Simon McMenemy’s preference to pack the midfield in his chosen formations, Wright needs to be adaptable to wherever he is placed in the midfield options.
“He likes to play 3-5-2, or 4-5-1, so my position is sort of three positions. I’m just looking to get on the team every game and keep working hard in training.”
Fresh from winning his first trophy with the Sparks in the PFF National Club Championship triumph, Wright is upbeat about the Loyola Meralco Sparks’ chances this season.
“Coming off the Smart Nationals victory, everybody’s very confident. Ceres, Global, and Kaya are our main threats, but I think we have enough in the tank to beat everyone this season. I’m very positive about it.”
