The Loyola Meralco Sparks is pleased to announce the signing of Serbian center back Milan Nikolic. A key figure in Global’s title-winning year, the towering defender is expected to provide a commanding presence in the First Team’s back line alongside Joaco Cañas.
It’s a partnership that general manager Belay Fernando is eager to see play out.
“I’m really excited to see how he works with Joaco because I know both of them are very aggressive –even on corners. They both score goals. We’ll just see how it plays out in terms of who will be commanding the backline. I guess we’ll see this as training progresses, but I’m really excited to see two strong personalities to lead the back.”
The soon-to-be 29-year-old joins a new-look club that has experienced changes in management, coaching staff, and players — a fresh setup he believes is geared for success.
“I decided to come back to the Philippines to join Meralco because, I think they have a champions future. I think we can win the League and I hope the potential Cup as well, so that’s why I came here,” he explained.
Nikolic also points to the opportunity to make history in the first ever edition of the Philippines Football League as added incentive in making the move to the club.
“I made history with Global last season when we got first place and became the first Filipino club to qualify for the AFC Champion’s League. That was one historical point for me in the Philippines. For the second one, I want to be the first winner in the upcoming national league.”
And it’s that particular winning mentality that sparked the interest to acquire his services, aside of course, from his formidable 6’1″ frame, and aggressive defensive prowess.
“We wanted to bring players who know how to win championships,” Fernando said. “And obviously, he knows how to win championships.”
