Years with Meralco: 5

As one of the longest serving players for the Meralco Bolts, how would you describe the journey so far?
It’s been a great experience. I’ve seen a lot of players come and go actually, a lot of friends. Just to see the team start all the way from the bottom from when I got here, and to grow to our final series last year, is a great experience. It’s good to see, like, you putting in all this hard work, you watching all the guys doing the work, and finally seeing it payoff — it’s the best thing to see.

Have your responsibilities changed as a veteran in this organization?

Coach Norman and the other coaches made me and Papa Rey (Hugnatan) the captain and that kinda changed my perspective. I take more responsibility for myself, to try and lead these guys, and show everyone what must be done to win. I try to work a little bit harder just so everyone sees me working hard — it pushes them too. They gave me a little more responsibility as the captain, and I feel like it’s my team, and I have to lead these guys to the finals and win the championship.

What are your other interests?

Mostly, right now, hanging out with my dog all the time, it takes most of my time and my girlfriend. Other than that, just looking at other businesses and ideas to invest in while I’m out here. Besides that, just chillin’ at the house.

How do you see the team’s chances this season?

I feel like for me, I wanna get in the semis every single conference. We haven’t done that yet as an organization. I wanna do that. I wanna make it to the finals and I wanna win the championship in one of these conferences. It’s not gonna be all roses, and we’re not gonna go undefeated in every conference but we’re gonna be in every game. We have the chance to win every game, and if we stick to the game plan and stick to what works for us, we should have a great chance to win a championship sometime this year.

Do you feel like you have the right personnel for an up-tempo kind of gameplay now?

I feel like with the guys that we have, we could play any type of tempo we want. We could go slow when we got our bigs – Rabeh, Kelly and all our big guys. We could go fast. We got me. We can play big. We got Newsome who can push the ball. All rookies are high energy guys. I feel like we can adjust to any type of system that we want to run. But yeah, I mean, if coach Norman wants to go up-tempo, we got the players to do that.
