Achievements: UFL Cup Champion, PFF National Club Championship Winner

James Younghusband is the captain of the Loyola Meralco Sparks. His fiery demeanor, consistently high expectations, and highly professional approach, embody the spirit of the club. But with such a title comes responsibility, and the skipper is more than happy to take on the added obligations.

“It’s really cool. Obviously there’s a lot of great personalities here, and a lot of big personality types. It’s good to keep them in check. But they’re all good players, so it makes my job easier,” said Younghusband. “There’s a bit more pressure and responsibility, but I enjoy it.”

James started his football career with the Chelsea Youth Academy, where he played for both the Youth and Reserve team. He played in several clubs in England before moving to the Philippines for good in 2009.

Armed with quality footballing education from the very beginning, James joined the national team as an 18-year-old, just a year after representing the country in the SEA Games. Since his debut in 2006, Younghusband has remained a part of the Philippine National Team setup – scoring ten goals from his position as a winger.

Despite his wide position on the field, James Younghusband has been on a scoring spree in this UFL season, currently leading the club with six goals after the first round. Utilizing his fantastic heading ability, his clinical finishing, and a renewed furvor to find the back of the net, the captain has been on fire this season. Add the six assists he’s provided so far, and he’s hands down the top performer of the 2015 UFL season so far.

And having recently won the PFF National Club Championship, the captain is aware that the level of competition is only going to get higher.

“We have a great squad here,” said James. “And that’s why we should be ready, especially now that we’ve won the Smart Championships. And having beaten the likes of Ceres, and League champions Global, there’s a big bullseye on our backs. We’re now the team that everyone wants to beat, so every game for us is like a Cup final.”
