Years Playing Volleyball:
Joined Power Spikers in: 2014
Previous teams: DLSU
How did you get started with the sport of volleyball?
Fifth grade I joined the intrams. I had no idea about the sport. I didn’t know that you needed to get the ball over within the lines. I just knew that you had to send it over, and if the other team didn’t touch the ball it would be a point. So I was fighting with the umpire, and she said, ‘Maybe you should join the volleyball team so I can explain to you all the rules.’
So I said ‘Okay, okay, I wanna know the rules because, this is very annoying. We’re losing even though we keep sending the ball back over.’ I fell in love with the game after training for two weeks in St. Scholastica Manila.
What is your favorite aspect of the game?
I’m more of a defensive player. I like blocking. No matter how hard the attack comes to the net, if it’s a good blocker against a strong spiker, it’s always a fun competition up in the air – a sort of joust up there at the net. So if you block a strong ball, it comes back to them harder and that’s fun.
What does it mean to be playing for the Meralco Power Spikers?
It’s a rebirth for Meralco. We’re composed of half of Meralco employees, and half that are not. It’s really a special team for me. We’re still in the development process, but I’m really excited to see the teams progress. I only joined a few months back, but I feel very close to everyone. The management as well, they’re very supportive, so I really enjoy it here.
Strengths you bring to the team:
Yes, blocking is my specialty, along with my bubbly personality! *laughs*
Juggling both work and playing:
It’s a lot like college. It’s mentally more exhausting since you are making choices for the company, as opposed to college where there’s an option of a retake when you fail. But I really like it because I’m also working for Meralco, and my favorite days are the ones where I get to spend time with my work mates and my teammates after.
