It looked as if victory was finally on the cards. Heading in to the fourth set, the Meralco Power Spikers had taken the lead, fresh from a commanding 25-14 performance in the third set. Instead, with their backs against the wall, the Foton Tornadoes turned it up to snatch the last two sets, making it four straight wins with a 25-18, 18-25, 14-25, 25-16, 15-8 win on Sunday.

Christina Alessi led the charge for the Power Spikers with 18 points, while Mika Reyes and Mary Joy Baron chipped in with 13 each. Leading all players, however, was Foton’s Lindsay Stalzer, who finished the game with 24 points, leading the way as Jaja Santiago and Kathleen Messing added 14 and 13, respectively.

Down 2-1 heading into the fourth set, Tornadoes coach Vilet Ponce de Leon felt it was her team’s defense that ultimately turned the tide in their favor.

“We only gathered ourselves in the fourth set and concentrated on defense in the fifth to claim this win. I told them that we have to play defense, it’s the only thing that can bail us out,” she said after the game.

The result leaves Meralco winless after eight games, with Foton effectively sealing passage into the PSL Grand Prix semi-finals.
