After dropping the Philippine Superliga Grand Prix opener to the Foton Tornadoes, the Meralco Power Spikers are looking to get into the win column, when they face the Petron Blaze Spikers on Tuesday, 4:15pm at the San Juan Arena.
The clash is expected to be an explosive affair, as the Blaze Spikers are not only the recent All-Filipino champions of the PSL, they also employ four former Meralco players: Aby Maraño, Fille Cayetano, Jen Reyes, and Maica Morada. Petron also boasts the services of reigning MVP Rachel Daquis, and Best Middle Blocker Aleona Denise Manabat.
Despite their firepower, however, they dropped their first Grand Prix game as well, losing out to the Cignal HD Spikers, who had import Ariel Usher explode for 31 points in the five-set thriller.
With only American import, Christina Alessi, reaching double figures last Saturday, head coach Ramil de Jesus will be hoping he can get more production from his local players. Standouts Cha Cruz, Steph Mercado, and Mika Reyes only managed to combine for 11 points, while being unable to curb the production of opposition import, Lindsay Stalzer, who finished with 18.
The game against Petron will be the first of two on the day, and will be aired live on TV 5. Cignal and Philips Gold do battle immediately after to close out the day’s double header.
